About Harthwaite
Harthwaite is a private holdings and advisory firm. We exist to help good businesses endure — and to compound capital patiently, the way a woodland grows.
Our story
Across the north of England, place names ending in -thwaite mark a clearing made productive by patient work — a piece of forest opened up, tended over seasons, and made to endure. We chose the name deliberately. It says almost everything we believe about capital.
Harthwaite was founded on a simple frustration with the way most capital behaves toward the businesses it owns. Funds are raised against a clock; the clock demands growth, then an exit; the exit demands a sale; and the sale is often timed for the fund, not for the business or the people who built it. Owners feel this pressure even when no one names it.
We set out to do something more useful and more durable: to deploy permanent capital from our own balance sheet, to hold companies for as long as they compound, to advise owners as we would wish to be advised, and to measure ourselves in decades rather than quarters. The structure follows the conviction. Everything we do — acquisitions, advisory, growth investments, real assets — is an expression of the same patient idea.
We would rather own one excellent business for twenty years than ten average ones for two.
What we value
These are not aspirational words for a wall. They are the constraints we put on ourselves — the things we will refuse even when they are profitable.
We treat every company as something held in trust — for its customers, its staff and its future. A good owner leaves a business stronger than they found it.
Compounding rewards the unhurried. We would rather miss an opportunity than force one, and we never let a calendar override a judgment about what is right.
We give owners the truth, including when it costs us a deal. A reputation built over years is worth more than any single transaction closed in a week.
We do a small number of things and do them well. Saying no to what does not fit keeps us free to say a wholehearted yes when the right business comes along.
Our approach
Ownership is a verb. Once we are in, we are present — but in a particular way.
We help set strategy and hold the line on the things that matter — capital discipline, talent, the long view — and then trust management to run the business day to day.
Because we are not draining a portfolio to return cash on a schedule, the companies we own can reinvest in their people, their systems and their future.
From finance and governance to talent and technology, we bring practical support — and we are honest about where we add value versus where we should step back.
If and when a sale ever comes, it will be because the time is genuinely right — not because a fund needs to realise. Often, the right answer is simply to keep holding.
The people behind the firm
Harthwaite is deliberately compact: the people you meet at the first meeting are the people who make the decisions and stay close to the relationship for its duration.
Senior practitioners with backgrounds in private capital, M&A and operational leadership — the team that sources, structures and stewards every relationship.
Experienced chairs, finance leaders and sector operators who join the table when their judgment is relevant — then step back when it is not.
The management teams who run our portfolio companies day to day — the people who actually create the value. Our job is to support them, not to replace them.
Group & operating companies
The clearest way to understand how we operate is to look at a company we operate.
European Technical is our UAE operating company — a licensed Dubai home-maintenance and technical-services business serving homes and property across the emirate. It embodies our philosophy in a single, tangible business: a service company run to a high standard, held for the long term, and allowed to compound carefully. For us it is both a portfolio holding and a working example of how Harthwaite partners with management.
The quickest way to find out is a short, candid conversation. Tell us about your business and what you are weighing — we will tell you plainly whether and how we can help.
